Sodalite is typically a dark blue mineral that has derived its name from its sodium content. A deposit of sodalite was discovered in Greenland in the early 19th century, and in the late 19th century major deposits of gem-quality material were discovered in Ontario, Canada.
Additional current deposits include Brazil, Canada, and France. The origin of this mineral is predominantly magmatic. In nature, it is most commonly found in blue to blue-grey or purple colour, interspersed with white calcite; there are rare occurrences in light pink, as well as grey, greenish and clear. Its pink variety, hackmanite, is a highly valued mineral among jewellers. Its special feature is that it can change colour under the influence of sunlight and UV light. The unique Art Nouveau jewellery by Evald Nielsen, Denmark, or the jewellery of the Greek designer Ilias Lalaounis are among the most famous renderings of sodalite. Sodalite has also been used in the dial of ladies’ watches by Rolex.
